What you need to know
According to theLinkedIn job descriptionof Nyk van Dyk, co-president of Activision Blizzard Studios, we may be getting new shows based on Blizzard games. Part of Dyk’s job description states that he is the executive producer of Diablo, a TV show based on the Diablo game franchise. This show is evidently stylized like an anime and is in pre-production at Netflix.
Another part of his job description indicates he has sold an animated series based on Overwatch. Overwatch is an incredibly popular hero shooter, recently crossing50 million playersacross all platforms.
It’s worth noting this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about these potential shows. Back in 2018,reports indicatedthat a Diablo animated series was being pitched. This is however an additional piece of concrete evidence, so we could see some announcements in the near future.
WithDiablo 4andOverwatch 2both announced and in development, this is definitely a great time for new shows based on gaming properties. We’ve seen how mainstream success of a TV show can boost video game sales, as release of The Witcher TV show on Netflix, paired with some discounts, saw sales of The Witcher 3: Wild Huntgo up 554% in the U.S.compared to the previous December.
