AT&T and Comcast remove internet data caps due to coronavirus outbreak

What you need to know

Internet service providers (ISPs) in the United States are notorious for having data caps, but it looks like coronavirus is changing their tune. A lot of people are staying at home or working from home, and that means that they need more internet. Instead of charging people more, AT&T and Comcast have suspended data caps for the next few months.

According to a report byIGN, Vice received a statement from AT&T that said the following.

Many of our AT&T Internet customers already have unlimited home internet access, and we are waiving internet data overage for the remaining customers.

Comcast added the following to Variety.

Our hope is that broader access and faster speeds will help all of our Internet Essentials customers more easily work from home, access educational resources, obtain important government health care alerts, and stay in contact with their families during this difficult time.

It’s great to see that ISPs are responding humanely to the coronavirus outbreak. Who knows, maybe these companies will remove data caps even after the pandemic subsides, whenever that may be. Though, at this point, it seems doubtful.
