Microsoft will discontinue HoloLens 2, marking the end of the company’s original and second-generation augmented reality (AR) headsets. The Redmond-based tech giant advises those who still want to purchase the device to do so as soon as possible, as the stock will soon dwindle.

According to the latest reports, Microsoft will continue supporting the HoloLens 2 with security updates and critical patches until 2028.

HoloLens 2 was released in 2019 and designed for businesses and developers. However, the device hasn’t yet become popular among usual consumers. Its price, $3,500, makes HoloLens 2 a pretty expensive machine.

The HoloLens 2 has gained popularity among business users, and the US Army is also using HoloLens-based IVAS headsets. Meanwhile, Microsoft informed UploadVR that it is ‘fully committed’ to its collaboration with the US Army.

If you’ve been following us, you know this was supposed to happen: Microsoft deprecatedits Windows Mixed Realityplatform last year, followed by layoffs at the department this year.

The future of Microsoft’s AR efforts remains unclear—especially given the exits of longtime mixed reality executives, includingAlex Kipman, the creator of HoloLens—but one thing’s for sure: HoloLens is no more.
