Rumored Star Wars: KOTOR remake looks to retool the story of both games
A retelling of the classic RPGs, with a bit of new canon thrown in for good measure.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most revered games in Star Wars history, and one of the highest-rated games of all time. Despite this fact, however, we’ve only ever gotten one sequel, which was released one-and-a-half years after the original’s release. It’s now been nearly 17 years since the release of the original title, and rumors of a remake are starting up again, coming from the same sources atCinelinxthat revealed Ewan McGregor’s reprisal of Obi-Wan in theupcoming Kenobi serieson Disney+.
While there were rumors several years back of EA reviving the franchise after such a long hiatus, including the stoppage of several fan remake projects at the time, these latest rumors spell a remake of a completely different nature. Rather than a “simple” HD Remaster or a more involved remake with a newer engine and voiceover work, EA’s new Knights of the Old Republic game is, allegedly, a complete remake of the story elements present in both Bioware’s KOTOR 1 and Obsidian’s KOTOR 2. If previous rumors are to be taken into account, Bioware won’t bethe one making it.

That reality might worry some fans of the old canon, as it means reworking an untold number of story elements to fit in with the current canon that’s being developed by Disney and Lucasfilm. It’s entirely likely that parts of the story are being reworked in order to fit more cohesively together with the upcomingseries of filmsfor the Star Wars universe, which are not being developed in the more traditional trilogy format. Instead, Project Luminous, as it was once known as, is an over-arching series of projects designed to tell a greater narrative and is made up of a number of movies, games, books, and other media.
What can we expect from the possible new entry into the series, then? This new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game is almost certainly pseudo-sequel, with a variety of story elements that harken back to the stories told through the existing KOTOR games. It’s far too early in the process to guess at much of anything, but there’s a likelihood that this will be a next-generation title that could be unveiled as early as this year’s E3. EA’sStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderwas met with excellent critical reviews and positive fan reactions, which bodes well for the future of the franchise in the giant publisher’s hands.
